It's only reasonable that many small businesses or organisations feel they should build their own website. Afterall they often design their own print media.
The reality is that you can create your own website if you want to do so. The tools are available, some of them for free. In some circumstances these same tools are utilised by website designers and developers
The question is this. Is doing so the best use of your time? How much time and money may you need to invest to do the job well, and what happens to your other core tasks while you are focussed upon learning how to build an online presence?
My experience is that website development and content management are often done in-house due to a mistaken belief that it costs less to do so. It is also my experience that this is rarely the case.
Take for example a basic website I recently developed for a small business. A pizza house, where the owners wanted nothing more than an electronic brochure to sit alongside their social media channel. They had tried to build in-house however the project had stalled. The result was a poor representation of their business online. The website certainly did not reflect the quality of their product.
The owners of the business did not want to spend a significant amount on a website. I respected their wishes by creating the website using a freely available website building tool. Total cost was only a few hundred dollars.
Is it the most beautiful website in the world? No. That's wasn't the customers need. They simply wanted an online presence so that those not using social media would be able to find them. The content tells their story, the images show off their product and service, there is a current menu and a contact page to show customers how to find them.
I'm not suggesting we would take this approach for every website or app developed. To the contrary, often the customer need dictates that level of design and development expertise. My point is this. Even when your needs are simple and straightforward it will likely save time, minimise stress and cost less by allowing me to create your website for you.
